Senior Software Engineer
A high-signal opening, but the loop is graded on failure modes, not throughput.
This is a high-signal opening. Stripe rarely posts a public senior IC seat on Payments Infrastructure without an internal candidate already circling, so if you see it live for more than four business days it is a real search — not a paper posting. The compensation band is honest for New York and San Francisco totals; ask your recruiter for the geo-adjusted equivalent in a lower-cost metro so you are comparing apples to apples. The tell in this JD is the phrase ‘own reliability of a top-three API surface.’ That is code for on-call, and Stripe on-call is real. We push our members to negotiate the pager rotation and the shadow-week before they push on the equity refresh — the second lever is nine times larger over four years. Our engineering members who land at Stripe usually come from Square, Adyen, Plaid, Chime, Ramp, Mercury, and Robinhood; the shortest path in from outside fintech is either infra work with strict correctness constraints (databases, distributed queues) or a systems-heavy backend at a company shipping 99.99 percent-plus SLAs. If you are more product-shaped than infra-shaped, we route those members to the Terminal or Radar teams instead — the same base band, a friendlier interview loop, and cleaner scope. The one caution: this role has a systems-design round that is graded on failure-mode taxonomy, not throughput math. Bring receipts on a system you owned that broke and how the postmortem changed the design. Your strategist will drill you on that story for two full sessions before the loop.
About the role
Stripe is hiring a Senior Software Engineer on the Payments Infrastructure team, reporting to Peter Ranganathan, Senior Engineering Manager. This is a full-time role that can be worked remotely from anywhere in the US, with base compensation between $210,000–$285,000 plus equity (0.05% – 0.10%).
The team you are joining owns a first-class surface at Stripe — the kind of scope that shows up on the company's public roadmap and gets discussed by the executive team every quarter. That matters because the seat's blast radius is meaningful: what you ship will be visible to leadership and the impact will compound across your tenure. It also means the hiring bar is set to a candidate who has done this work at a comparable scale before, or has done adjacent work in a way that will translate quickly.
You will work day-to-day with a cross-functional pod that includes engineering, design, and adjacent product owners. Expect a written-first working culture, a strong bias toward shipping over deliberating, and a metric bar that is quantitatively defined and reviewed weekly. If you thrive when the goal is unambiguous and the path is your own to draw, this is the right shape of role for you.
The tools you will use include Ruby, Go, React, PostgreSQL, Kafka, AWS, plus the internal platforms most senior candidates at Stripe would already be familiar with by name. The onboarding period runs roughly ninety days, with a formal ramp plan and a peer buddy assigned during week one.
What you'll do
- Own reliability of a top-three Stripe API surface, including on-call rotation and postmortem stewardship.
- Design and ship changes to the Payments Infrastructure surface with strict correctness and availability constraints.
- Write memos and design docs that set direction for cross-functional pods; drive weekly review rhythms.
- Partner with design and product owners on scope, sequencing, and rollout of visible roadmap items.
- Mentor peers and raise the technical bar of the team through code review, hiring, and pairing.
What we need
Required
- 6–10 years of experience in a comparable Senior IC — Fintech role, with at least one recent seat at a company shipping to a similar user base or scale.
- Demonstrated ownership of a project or surface where you defined the strategy, executed it, and can articulate the trade-offs.
- Strong written communication — expect to write memos, docs, and reviews as part of the weekly rhythm.
- Fluency with Ruby, Go, React, and comfort ramping quickly on PostgreSQL, Kafka, AWS.
- The judgment to know when to escalate, when to push back, and when to ship.
Nice to have
- Prior experience at a company with a comparable scale, complexity, or user base to Stripe.
- Contributions to public writing, open source, or a body of work in the Senior IC — Fintech space.
- A track record of hiring, mentoring, or growing peers into stronger operators.
What Stripe says will disqualify you — they did not say. Marqee's read: any single item on the required list, missing without a strong compensating story, is likely to become the reason you get filtered. The reverse is also true: a strong compensating story can carry you past a missing box. Your strategist will help you decide which gaps to name upfront and which to let the loop reveal.
Compensation
Marqee's compensation team benchmarks every listing against private offer data from our placed-candidate network. Here is how the offer breaks down and where the real negotiation levers sit.
| Component | Range | Marqee read |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary | $210,000–$285,000 | In-band for the level and metro. Modest negotiation room (2–5%). |
| Equity | 0.05% – 0.10% | Primary negotiation lever. Well-prepared candidates capture 15–30% upside here. |
| Signing bonus | Typically $25K–$60K | Available for candidates with a competing offer. Ask directly. |
| Refresh cycle | Annual (typical) | The refresh clock is where compounding happens. Negotiate for a 2-year cliff, not 4. |
| Bonus / commission | Role-dependent | See interview process for structure. |
| Benefits | Top-of-market health, 401k, PTO | Not a negotiation lever. Assume best-in-class. |
The single biggest mistake candidates make on this offer profile is negotiating base first and equity as an afterthought. The math favors the reverse: for a four-year retention window at this level, a fifteen percent lift in equity outperforms a five percent lift in base by roughly two-to-one on total realized comp. Your strategist will benchmark your offer against three comparable placements in our network and give you a script.
Interview process
Based on Marqee-network placements at Stripe in the last twelve months, expect a loop with the following shape. The exact order can vary but the round types are stable.
- Recruiter screen (30 min)
Comp calibration and level check. Say your number range early; the recruiter will use it to route you to the right leveling committee. Do not undersell here — the level decision is made in this call.
- Hiring-manager conversation (45 min)
Peter Ranganathan, Senior Engineering Manager, will walk you through the team's charter and ask you to walk through one project in depth. Bring a written artifact you can share on screen.
- Craft / technical round (60 min)
Role-specific: live problem for engineering, portfolio walkthrough for design, case for product, model walkthrough for data. Marqee members prepare with two mocks minimum.
- Cross-functional panel (60 min)
Two to three panelists from adjacent teams. Graded on collaboration, judgment, and how you make decisions under conflicting inputs.
- Leadership / bar-raiser (45 min)
Senior leader from outside the immediate team. Not scored on domain fit — scored on the shape of your reasoning.
- Reference checks + offer (async)
Provide 3–5 references. Marqee coaches you on which references to offer and prepares them for the specific questions Stripe asks.
