Director of Product
Linear · Product · Reports to Karri Saarinen (CEO)
Linear does not hire a Director of Product often — this is the second time in company history — and the seat reports directly to Karri, which tells you everything about the bar. If you are considering applying, the first question your strategist will ask is not are you qualified but are you willing to be measured on craft, weekly, in public. Linear's culture is unusually direct and unusually written, and the Director role is expected to raise the ceiling on both. Our members who reach the final round for seats like this share three traits: they have shipped a product with a shape (not a portfolio of features), they have built and lost a team and can talk about the loss without varnish, and they write clearly under time pressure. If your last three years read as "managed X PMs across Y surfaces," that framing will get you screened out; we will rebuild the narrative around one or two product decisions that defined the last two years. The interview loop is short by senior-role standards — five conversations including one with Karri, one with the design lead, one with the engineering lead, and two peer PMs — but the written exercise between round two and three is where the loop is decided. Linear will send a real product question and ask for a memo, forty-eight hours, no meetings. We coach members through three practice memos before the real one. On comp: the base is honest, the equity is where the meaningful upside sits, and there is real room to negotiate the grant size if the loop goes well. Ask for the strike-price refresh policy in writing.
About the role
Linear is hiring a Director of Product on the Product team, reporting to Karri Saarinen, CEO. This is a full-time role that can be worked remotely from anywhere in the US or EU, with base compensation between $250,000–$320,000 plus equity (0.20% – 0.40% ISOs on the early-stage grant scale).
Linear is ~110 people building the issue-tracking and project-planning tool used by tens of thousands of developer teams — from small startups to public-company engineering orgs. The product team you are joining is 6 PMs (7 with this hire) sitting inside a company where the founders still ship pixels. This Director seat owns one of three surface areas — Core Issues + Projects, Cycles + Planning, or the emerging Customer Requests + Roadmap surface — assigned during the loop based on your background.
Linear culture is remote-first (fully distributed across US and EU time zones), quality-obsessed, and unusually direct. There are no formal OKRs, no all-hands theater, and no roadmap slides — just a rolling Linear-tracked plan visible to the whole company. The CEO Karri Saarinen (co-founder, previously design lead at Airbnb) still reviews every design and product doc. This is a small-team seat: you own outcomes, not headcount, and you will be measured on shipped craft weekly.
Day-to-day tools: Linear (obviously), a lightweight Notion or Slite for longer docs, GitHub for engineering context. There is no standing meeting rhythm — Linear runs largely async with focused sync time for specific product decisions. The onboarding is intentionally short: 30 days to ship a small change end-to-end, 60 days to publish a written roadmap thesis for your surface, 90 days to hire the first PM under you.
What you'll do
- Own the strategy, roadmap, and outcomes for a first-class surface, presenting weekly to the executive team.
- Recruit, hire, and grow a small team of PMs — one to three direct reports in the first twelve months.
- Set the metric bar for the surface and enforce it in weekly reviews, in writing.
- Partner tightly with design and engineering leads to make decisions faster than the org expects.
- Represent Linear's product point of view externally — a small amount of writing, speaking, and customer work.
- Push back on internal proposals when the shape is wrong, and know when to escalate.
What we need
Required
- 10+ years in product, with at least 4 years leading a product surface or team at a developer-tools, productivity, or infrastructure company.
- A shipped product with a shape — you can point at software that exists in the world and say "I decided this was worth building and this was not," and defend both.
- Public writing that a stranger could read and understand — a blog post, spec, or open memo. Linear leadership reads samples before Round 4.
- Comfort operating without OKRs, standing rituals, or roadmap slides. If your last role's cadence was quarterly-planning-heavy, this seat will feel unmoored.
- Direct experience hiring PMs — not just working with them. This role hires 1–3 PMs in the first 12 months.
Preferred
- Prior developer-tools experience (GitHub, GitLab, Vercel, Sentry, Datadog, Retool, Airtable, Notion, Figma).
- Founding-team or first-PM experience at a company that later scaled — you have felt the moment when process starts to matter.
- Design-adjacent taste — Linear PMs are expected to critique mocks with a designer's vocabulary, not just a PM's.
What Linear actually filters on: the loop tests whether you can write clearly under time pressure. Candidates whose memos read as "framework applied to problem" bounce. Candidates whose memos read as "specific decision with a stance and a trade-off admitted" get through. Your strategist will run three practice memos with you before the real one — the same shape Linear will send.
Compensation
Marqee's compensation team benchmarks every listing against private offer data from our placed-candidate network. Here is how the offer breaks down and where the real negotiation levers sit.
| Component | Range | Marqee read |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary | $250,000–$320,000 | Location-agnostic band — Linear pays the same US or EU. Negotiation room is 3–6%, mostly from the Karri round. |
| Equity (ISOs) | 0.20%–0.40% | Early-stage grant scale. Linear last raised at ~$1.25B; this grant is $2.5M–$5M at current preferred, potentially materially more at exit. The lever that matters. |
| Strike-price refresh | Discretionary at CEO review | The under-negotiated item. Ask in writing for a strike-price refresh policy if the 409A moves — Linear has done this quietly for late-stage hires. |
| Signing bonus | $25K–$75K | Available with a competing offer. Karri decides personally. |
| Refresh cadence | Annual, discretionary | Linear does not have a fixed refresh policy at Director level. Negotiate an explicit review at month 18. |
| Benefits | Full medical (US/EU), 25 PTO days, remote stipend | The remote-stipend is $2K one-time + $500/mo — real for the on-site office you build at home. |
The mistake we see most on Linear Director offers: candidates negotiate the grant size but ignore the strike-price refresh and the promotion-to-VP timeline. Karri hires the Director role with a specific outcome in mind (surface-owner → VP within 24 months if it goes well). Get that timeline in writing during the offer conversation — it materially changes the exit-value math.
Interview process
Based on Marqee-network placements at Linear in the last twelve months, expect a loop with the following shape. The exact order can vary but the round types are stable.
Recruiter screen (30 min)
Comp calibration and level check. Say your number range early; the recruiter uses it to route you to the right leveling committee. Do not undersell — the level decision is made in this call.
Hiring-manager conversation (45 min)
Karri Saarinen, CEO, walks you through the team's charter and asks you to walk through one project in depth. Bring a written artifact you can share on screen.
Written product memo (48 hours, async)
Linear sends a real product question and asks for a memo — no meetings, no calls. This is where the loop is decided. Marqee members write three practice memos before the real one.
Cross-functional panel (60 min)
Design lead, engineering lead, and two peer PMs. Graded on collaboration, judgment, and how you make decisions under conflicting inputs.
Leadership / bar-raiser (45 min)
Senior leader from outside the immediate team. Not scored on domain fit — scored on the shape of your reasoning.
Reference checks + offer (async)
Provide 3–5 references. Marqee coaches you on which references to offer and prepares them for the specific questions Linear asks.

How competitive is the Linear interview loop?
The loop is among the more rigorous at this level of the market. Marqee members prepare with mock interviews from people who have placed candidates at Linear in the last two years — see the Interview Process section above for the specific rounds.
What if I do not have all the listed qualifications?
Job listings are wish lists. If you have most of the technical requirements and a strong narrative around the gap, apply. Our strategist team can help you decide whether this is a stretch worth chasing or a role to skip in favor of a closer fit.
Does Marqee take a commission from Linear?
No. Marqee is paid by our members, not employers. We do not receive placement fees from Linear or any other company; there is no incentive conflict.
