Senior Designer
Figma design roles are the single most competitive seats in our design portfolio, and FigJam is the most competitive team at Figma — because the surface has enough greenfield to matter and enough scale that shipped work compounds. The good news is Figma is one of the few large-company design orgs that still hires primarily on portfolio depth over pedigree. We have placed members here from Squarespace, Notion, Linear, Loom, Miro, and, twice, from consultancies with no product-design title at all. The bad news is the portfolio bar is not what most design leads think it is. Figma does not want ten polished case studies; they want two deep ones with the messy middle intact — including the version you shipped that got rolled back. If your portfolio reads like a hero reel, your strategist will restructure it before we submit. The loop has a live design exercise (two hours, driven in Figma with the interviewer watching) and a critique round where you critique a real production surface. Preparation for that critique round is where Marqee members most out-perform the general applicant pool — we run mock critiques with two staff designers from our network and you will do three of them. The offer bar for this seat sits at senior, but the loop is calibrated to flex up to staff for the right candidate. Ask about the leveling calibration explicitly during the recruiter screen.
About the role
Figma is hiring a Senior Designer on the FigJam team, reporting to Sara Kim, Head of Design, Collaboration. This is a full-time role based on-site in New York, NY, with base compensation between $185,000–$240,000 plus equity (RSU grant + refresh cycle).
FigJam is Figma's whiteboarding surface — the product used by 4M+ weekly active users to brainstorm, sync, and plan before anything is designed. The seat owns a specific area of the FigJam canvas (real-time collaboration, templating, or AI-assisted structure — assigned in your first two weeks based on team need and your interests). Figma's design org is famously flat and craft-forward: your Head of Design is expected to still ship pixels, and so is every senior designer.
Figma's operating culture is collaboration-first — the company runs on its own product, so your specs live in FigJam, your co-design happens live in multiplayer, and critique is a daily practice rather than a scheduled ceremony. NYC office attendance is 3 days/week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday). Expect open critique sessions, cross-team ‘design forums’ every other Friday, and a leadership team that shows up to review work in progress rather than only at ship time.
Day-to-day tools are Figma and FigJam (you will use both, all day, every day), plus Notion for long-form specs and Loom for async updates. Design system contributions go through the Config Design Systems team's review pipeline. The onboarding is 90 days: weeks 1–3 shadow existing designers, weeks 4–8 ship your first small surface, weeks 9–12 co-own a quarterly ship with a mid-level designer.
What you'll do
- Own a surface within FigJam end-to-end — from problem definition through shipped, measurable outcome.
- Partner with engineering leads and PM to sequence the roadmap and defend trade-offs in weekly reviews.
- Contribute to the Figma design system with reusable patterns and documentation other designers can adopt.
- Run design critiques — both giving and receiving — as the operating rhythm of the design org.
- Write memos, decision docs, and post-mortems that make your reasoning legible to leadership.
- Mentor mid-level designers on the pod and help set the craft bar for the FigJam surface.
What we need
Required
- 5–9 years of product design experience, including at least three years shipping consumer or prosumer software (not agency work, not enterprise-only).
- A portfolio with two deep case studies — messy middle included, rolled-back version included. Hero reels bounce in the first-round review.
- Fluency in Figma as an operator, not just a user: keyboard shortcuts, auto-layout, variables, component APIs. You will design live on-screen in Round 4.
- Craft-first sensibility with a real point of view on interaction, motion, and information density. Figma designers are expected to defend a stance, not just present options.
- Comfort giving and receiving critique in real time — it is the design org's daily operating rhythm, not a monthly ceremony.
Nice to have
- Shipped work on real-time collaborative software (Notion, Linear, Loom, Miro, Google Docs, Slack canvases).
- Public writing about design practice — a Substack, a talk, a case study. Figma leadership reads them.
- Prior contribution to a design system used by 50+ designers; bonus for a token architecture role.
Compensation
Marqee's compensation team benchmarks every listing against private offer data from our placed-candidate network. Here is how the offer breaks down and where the real negotiation levers sit.
| Component | Range | Marqee read |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary | $185,000–$240,000 | Post-IPO Figma pays at 90th percentile for design; band flex is 3–6% and comes almost entirely from leveling to Staff mid-loop. |
| Equity (RSU) | ~$450K / 4 years | Now public-market RSUs (post-June 2024 IPO). Grant refreshes are annual and performance-linked; primary long-term lever. |
| Signing bonus | $30K–$70K | Standard with a competing offer. Design candidates from Loom, Notion, Linear see the top of the range. |
| Refresh cycle | Annual, performance-graded | Design ratings come from peer critique + shipped-work review, not manager alone. Rating of "exceeds" unlocks 1.4–1.8x refresh. |
| Learning stipend | $2,000 / year | Real budget for conferences, courses, and books. Designers actually use it — Config attendance is expected. |
| Benefits | Top-tier health, 20 days PTO, 16 wk parental | Standard post-IPO tech. No lever, but sabbatical at 5 years is unusual and worth planning around. |
The mistake we see most on Figma design offers: candidates target base and ignore leveling. This role is calibrated to flex to Staff for a strong loop, and the delta is roughly $60K in base plus a meaningfully larger RSU grant. Ask about the level explicitly in the recruiter screen and again in the debrief. Your strategist will script both conversations.
Interview process
Based on Marqee-network placements at Figma in the last twelve months, expect a loop with the following shape. The exact order can vary but the round types are stable.
Recruiter screen (30 min)
Comp calibration and level check. Say your number range early; the recruiter will use it to route you to the right leveling committee. Do not undersell here — the level decision is made in this call.
Hiring-manager conversation (45 min)
Sara Kim, Head of Design, Collaboration will walk you through the team's charter and ask you to walk through one project in depth. Bring a written artifact you can share on screen.
Portfolio deep-dive (60 min)
Two-case walkthrough with a senior designer and a PM. They want the messy middle — the version that got rolled back, the trade-off you regret. Prepared candidates rehearse this three times with a Marqee strategist.
Live design exercise (2 hrs)
Driven in Figma with the interviewer watching. Bring a keyboard-shortcut fluency; you will be judged on the seams between thinking and executing.
Critique round (45 min)
You critique a real production surface. This is where Marqee members most out-perform — we run mock critiques with two staff designers from our network.
Cross-functional panel (60 min)
Two to three panelists from adjacent teams. Graded on collaboration, judgment, and how you make decisions under conflicting inputs.
Leadership / bar-raiser (45 min)
Senior leader from outside the immediate team. Scored on the shape of your reasoning, not domain fit.

Frequently asked questions
Is this Figma Senior Designer listing still open?
As of 2026-06-22, yes. Marqee refreshes listings weekly and pulls any role that closes. The stated validThrough date is 2026-08-10; roles at this level occasionally close earlier if a strong candidate signs.
What does Figma actually pay for this role?
The public band is $185,000–$240,000 base plus equity (RSU grant + refresh cycle). Our strategists benchmark against private offer data in our network; if you are prepping for the loop with Marqee, we share the private comp benchmark on our first call.
Can Marqee help me apply to this specific role?
Yes. Members get a strategist-tailored resume and cover letter for this listing, a recruiter-outreach plan for the specific team, and interview preparation for the Figma loop. We have relationships with recruiters at Figma.
How competitive is the Figma interview loop?
The loop is among the more rigorous at this level of the market. Marqee members prepare with mock interviews from people who have placed candidates at Figma in the last two years — see the Interview Process section above for the specific rounds.
What if I do not have all the listed qualifications?
Job listings are wish lists. If you have most of the technical requirements and a strong narrative around the gap, apply. Our strategist team can help you decide whether this is a stretch worth chasing or a role to skip in favor of a closer fit.
Does Marqee take a commission from Figma?
No. Marqee is paid by our members, not employers. We do not receive placement fees from Figma or any other company; there is no incentive conflict.
