Short version: A great Production Helper résumé proves three things fast — attendance (a specific number, not a claim), safety (OSHA 10 and PIT certifications, LOTO awareness), and volume (cases per hour, pallets per shift, throughput hit rate). Keep it one page, single column, name the machines and forklift class by brand and class, and put your availability line at the top.

What a Production Helper actually does

A Helper — Production Worker (BLS occupation code 51-9198) is the entry-level manufacturing role that keeps a plant, warehouse, or fabrication shop supplied, cleaned, and moving. Roughly 500,000 workers hold this classification across food and beverage plants, plastics and packaging, metal fabrication, automotive tier suppliers, medical-device manufacturers, aerospace shops, printing and finishing, and third-party logistics fulfillment. The role sits underneath machine operator, assembler, and welder in the plant hierarchy, but it is the pipeline every one of those higher-paid roles feeds from. A strong helper who earns forklift, PIT, or line-lead certification inside twelve months is on a real career ladder.

A plant supervisor reading a helper résumé is not looking for a college degree. He or she is looking for three things: attendance (would you show up on time, every day, and cover a weekend if we asked?), safety (do you understand PPE, LOTO, and how not to get hurt around a running line?), and initiative (would you learn the next tool, run the machine when the operator calls out, and speak up when something is off?). The résumé that gets the call proves all three fast.

What hiring managers & ATS look for

  • Attendance & reliability. Attendance rate, on-time record, holiday coverage, and shift flexibility read as green flags at every plant.
  • Safety credentials. OSHA 10 (general industry), forklift / powered-industrial-truck operator certification, LOTO awareness, PPE compliance, hazmat awareness. Add the credential and issue date near the top.
  • Machines and tools you supported. Injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming, CNC, extrusion, filler line, wrapping/palletizing machine, packaging conveyor, powered pallet jack, forklift, walkie stacker, order picker, cherry picker.
  • Volume numbers. Cases per hour, pallets per shift, units built per line, throughput hit rate against production plan.
  • Quality and 5S. Reject rate on the line, 5S audit score, first-piece inspection support, sanitation compliance in food or medical.

Realistic pay range

BLS OES data (May 2023) put the national median wage for helpers — production workers (51-9198) at $16.90 an hour and $35,150 annually. Unionized food and beverage plants (UFCW, USW, Teamsters) sit at the top of the band with second-shift differentials adding another $1–$3 an hour. Automotive tier suppliers and aerospace pay similarly. Third-party logistics and non-union food processing anchor the bottom of the band; medical device and pharma pay a premium for cleanroom-qualified helpers.

Common Production Helper resume mistakes

Bulleting duties instead of numbers. "Assisted operators" is invisible. "Ran Line 2 backup at 200 cases per hour" is a hire.
No safety credential named. OSHA 10, PIT, LOTO awareness — all screen as keywords. If you have them, list them near the top.
Missing forklift class. Class I, II, III (sit-down, reach truck, cherry picker) — recruiters search on those. "Forklift certified" alone is thin.
No attendance line. Plant supervisors screen for attendance harder than most desk jobs. A specific number wins.
Skipping availability. "Available 1st, 2nd, and weekend shifts" belongs at the top — 24-hour operations screen literally for it.

Frequently asked questions

What should a Production Helper resume include?

A one-page, single-column résumé with name, title, contact, an availability line, a summary that names the industry (food/beverage, automotive, medical device, aerospace, 3PL) and the plant volume, a core-skills grid, two or three roles with quantified bullets (cases per hour, pallets per shift, throughput, attendance), and safety credentials near the top.

What safety credentials matter most for a production helper?

OSHA 10 (general industry) is the floor. Powered Industrial Truck (PIT) operator certification — Class I sit-down, Class II reach truck, Class III walkie stacker/cherry picker — is the second big one. LOTO awareness, PPE compliance, First Aid/CPR, and HACCP/GMP for food environments all read as green flags.

How do you quantify production helper experience?

Cases per hour, pallets per shift, throughput hit rate against production plan, reject rate on the line, attendance rate, LOTO audit score, 5S participation, and any cross-training you completed (backup operator on a line, forklift class, cleanroom qualification).

Do I need experience to get hired as a production helper?

Not usually — most plants hire entry level. What moves the résumé forward is a documented safety credential, a specific availability window, and even a short warehouse or restaurant job that shows attendance. If you have OSHA 10 or a forklift card before applying, you jump to the front.

How much does a production helper make?

The BLS median hourly wage for helpers — production workers (51-9198) was $16.90 as of May 2023. Unionized food and beverage plants sit at $19–$26 an hour base with shift differentials adding $1–$3. Cleanroom-qualified helpers in medical device and aerospace commonly earn $22–$30 an hour.

How do I move up from production helper?

The reliable ladder is Helper → Backup Operator on a specific line → Full Operator → Setup or Line Lead → Team Lead → Supervisor. The credentials that accelerate it: PIT certifications, cross-training on two additional machines, SQF/GMP/HACCP training in food, and a lean/5S certificate. Six months to a promotion is realistic in a well-run plant.

What shifts do plants hire for?

24-hour plants hire across 1st (typically 6am–2:30pm), 2nd (2pm–10:30pm), and 3rd (10pm–6:30am) shifts, plus weekend day and weekend night in some operations. 2nd and 3rd shifts pay a shift differential of $1–$3 an hour. Weekend-only 12-hour schedules are common in food/beverage.
