Short version: "Lawyer salary" is not one number. BLS reports a national mean near $161,000 and median near $135,000, but the market splits sharply into five compensation tiers — BigLaw associates on the Cravath scale ($225K first year, $435K+ eighth year), BigLaw equity partners at V100 firms ($1.5M–$8M+ PPP), in-house counsel ($170K–$1.5M+ depending on rung and company), government ($75K–$225K), and public-interest ($52K–$175K, meaningfully offset by PSLF). Market, class year, practice area, and firm-vs-in-house-vs-government are the four levers that decide the number. Below are the bands, the Cravath scale in full, in-house comp at each rung, partner economics at V100 tiers, and the negotiation moves that actually work.
The national picture
BLS OES 23-1011 (Lawyers) reports:
- Mean annual wage: ~$161,000
- Median annual wage: ~$135,000
- 10th percentile: ~$68,000
- 25th percentile: ~$92,000
- 75th percentile: ~$210,000
- 90th percentile: ~$243,000+
BLS caps the 90th percentile at a survey ceiling that does not reflect BigLaw equity partner earnings — which regularly clear $2M–$8M per year at the top tier and aren't captured in the OES ceiling. Read the bands below by tier for accurate market pay.
BigLaw associate scale (with bonuses)
The Cravath scale is the market. When Cravath raises, most V100 firms match within days. As of 2026:
| Class year | Base salary (Cravath scale) | Typical year-end bonus | Total comp |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st year | $225,000 | $20K–$25K | ~$245K–$250K |
| 2nd year | $235,000 | $30K–$35K | ~$265K–$270K |
| 3rd year | $260,000 | $50K–$60K | ~$310K–$320K |
| 4th year | $310,000 | $70K–$85K | ~$380K–$395K |
| 5th year | $365,000 | $85K–$100K | ~$450K–$465K |
| 6th year | $390,000 | $95K–$110K | ~$485K–$500K |
| 7th year | $415,000 | $105K–$115K | ~$520K–$530K |
| 8th year | $435,000+ | $115K+ | ~$550K+ |
Milbank and Cleary occasionally break scale upward by $5K–$25K per class year; other firms follow within weeks. Firms in secondary markets sometimes pay a "market-specific" scale that's 5–15% below New York; other firms pay New York scale in every office.
Law-firm partner economics
Partner pay is not lockstep. It follows firm-specific profits-per-partner (PPP) and originations. The tiers:
| Firm tier | Example firms | Non-equity (income) partner | Equity partner PPP | Rainmaker range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elite (Top 10 PPP) | Wachtell, S&C, Cravath, Davis Polk, Cleary, Latham, Kirkland, Simpson Thacher, Paul Weiss, STB | $500K–$1.2M | $4M–$8M+ | $10M–$30M+ |
| V50 | Weil, Skadden, Gibson Dunn, White & Case, Milbank, DLA Piper | $400K–$900K | $2.5M–$4.5M | $6M–$12M |
| V100 (middle) | Morrison Foerster, K&L Gates, Reed Smith, Sidley | $350K–$700K | $1.5M–$3M | $4M–$8M |
| Regional / mid-market | Metro strong firms | $250K–$500K | $500K–$1.2M | $1.5M–$3M |
| Small firm (5–25 lawyers) | Local plaintiff-side, boutique | N/A | $150K–$500K | $700K–$2M |
In-house counsel bands

Pay by practice area
At BigLaw associate rungs, practice does not affect pay — everyone is on scale. At partner rungs and in-house, practice matters materially.
Highest-paying at partner tier
- Private equity (transactions and fund formation): Top of partner earnings across V100.
- M&A corporate: Traditional top tier, still second only to PE at most elite firms.
- Complex commercial litigation: Uneven; rainmakers among the highest-paid partners in the country.
- Capital markets: Consistent top-tier at V50 firms.
- Tax: Steady, high-margin practice.
Solid but lower-tier
- Real estate
- Bankruptcy / restructuring
- IP litigation (patent litigation is uneven — huge contingency wins possible)
- Employment
- Regulatory (FDA, FCC, energy)

Negotiation moves that actually work
- Clerkship bonus. Federal clerks receive $75K–$85K bonuses at most V100 firms; some pay $115K–$185K for Supreme Court clerks. Confirm the number before signing.
- Class-year credit for a specific prior job. Prior clerkship or government service can advance you 1–2 class years at some firms. Ask.
- Practice-group placement. The single biggest career-shaping decision. Negotiate written commitment when possible.
- In-house negotiations: equity refresh grants, sign-on to cover forfeited RSUs, and title upgrades — all move.
- Government offers: pay is largely fixed by scale; negotiate start date, telework, and duty station instead.

BLS OES 23-1011 (Lawyers) reports a national mean annual wage near $161,000 and a median near $135,000. The single number hides enormous variance. First-year BigLaw associates earn $225,000 (Cravath scale) plus bonus; senior BigLaw associates earn $435,000+ base; equity partners at top firms earn $1.5M–$8M+ per year; in-house corporate counsel earn $180K–$450K; government lawyers earn $75K–$175K; public-interest lawyers earn $52K–$95K. Practice area (litigation, corporate/M&A, private equity, tax, IP, employment), market (New York, San Francisco, DC, Chicago, Los Angeles), and class year determine everything.
The 'Cravath scale' — set by Cravath, Swaine & Moore and matched or exceeded by most V100 firms — is the market anchor for BigLaw associate compensation. As of 2026 in most major markets: 1st-year $225,000, 2nd $235,000, 3rd $260,000, 4th $310,000, 5th $365,000, 6th $390,000, 7th $415,000, 8th $435,000. Add year-end bonuses ($20K–$115K depending on class year) and special bonuses in strong years. Milbank and Cleary occasionally break scale upward; other firms follow within weeks. Some firms pay less in secondary markets (Los Angeles, Chicago, DC, Houston) and use market-specific scales.
$225,000 base at Cravath-scale firms in New York, plus a year-end bonus of $20,000–$25,000 (typical first-year). Total first-year comp: $245K–$250K. Firms in secondary markets (Chicago, Los Angeles, DC, Houston, Miami) sometimes match New York scale and sometimes pay $190K–$215K. Non-BigLaw first-years (V100 firms outside the top 30, mid-market firms) earn $105K–$175K first year in most metros.
Vast range depending on firm and role. Non-equity (income) partners at BigLaw earn $400K–$1.2M. Equity partners at V100 firms earn $1.5M–$4M mean profits-per-partner (PPP), with top-tier firms (Wachtell, Sullivan & Cromwell, Cravath, Latham) reporting PPP $4M–$8M+ and elite rainmakers earning $10M–$30M+ in their peak years. Small-firm equity partners earn $150K–$500K depending on practice and geography. Partnership economics dominate lawyer compensation once you hit the equity tier.
Junior in-house counsel (2–5 years experience): $170K–$260K base plus 10–20% bonus and equity at tech companies. Senior counsel (5–10 years): $200K–$320K base plus 20–30% bonus and material equity. Deputy General Counsel or VP Legal: $275K–$500K base plus 30–50% bonus and significant equity. General Counsel of a mid-market company: $350K–$700K base plus bonus and equity. General Counsel of a large public tech company: $600K–$1.5M base plus multi-million equity grants. In-house pay compresses cash relative to BigLaw but adds equity that regularly clears the delta.
Federal: SAUSA / AUSA (assistant US attorneys) earn GS-13 through GS-15 ($108K–$185K in 2026). Federal agency counsel (SEC, DOJ, FTC, IRS, DOD) earn similar GS bands. Senior DOJ trial attorneys and section chiefs earn $175K–$225K plus locality pay. State: state attorney general staff earn $75K–$155K depending on state; state AG or division chief roles $155K–$225K. Local: city and county counsel earn $95K–$220K depending on metro.
Legal Aid, ACLU, NAACP LDF, Southern Poverty Law Center, Earthjustice, and similar 501(c)(3) legal-aid organizations pay $52K–$95K for first-year attorneys and $85K–$155K for senior attorneys. Executive director and litigation director roles at large public-interest organizations reach $175K–$375K. PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) forgives remaining federal loan balance after 120 qualifying payments while working full-time for a 501(c)(3) or government employer — the most important economic lever public-interest lawyers use.
In BigLaw, associate pay is on scale (identical by class year regardless of practice); partner pay is not. Private equity, M&A corporate, capital markets, and complex commercial litigation drive the top of partner earnings. In-house: technology (especially public tech GC roles), private equity in-house, and financial services pay highest. In government and public-interest, pay is more compressed across practice areas. Practice choice matters far more for lifestyle and long-term partner economics than for first-year salary.
