The work begins with blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics: you read them, plan the layout of circuits and panels, and install everything to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the local amendments enforced by the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ). A given day can mean running and bending conduit, pulling and terminating wire, installing service panels, mounting devices and lighting, landing breakers, and getting the work to pass a code inspection on the first submission. The other half of the job is troubleshooting - diagnosing faults with a multimeter, tracing circuits, isolating shorts and grounds, and restoring power safely.
The day shifts sharply by segment. A residential electrician wires homes and handles service calls, mostly at 120/240V single-phase. A commercial electrician works offices, retail, schools, and healthcare - three-phase power, larger services, extensive conduit and cable-tray systems, lighting controls, fire-alarm and life-safety wiring. The step-by-step path
Finish high school or a GED
A diploma or GED is required for almost every registered apprenticeship. Algebra, physics, and shop courses help both the application and the classroom side later.
Apply to an apprenticeship
Options: your local IBEW/NECA Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC), a non-union apprenticeship through ABC or IEC, or a company-sponsored program. Application windows are limited - most IBEW locals accept twice a year - so plan around them. Application usually includes an aptitude test, an interview, and sometimes a drug screen and physical.
Show up for your OJT hours
You will log roughly 8,000 on-the-job hours (about four years working full-time) under licensed electricians. Every hour is a real hour of the trade - conduit, wire pulls, panels, service calls, terminations. Programs step your pay up every 6-12 months as you clear hour milestones.
Take the classroom seriously
500-900 hours of classroom instruction covering NEC, AC/DC theory, motor controls, blueprint reading, and safety. This is where you learn the code cold - it will be on the licensing exam and it will keep you out of trouble on the job.
Earn safety credentials
OSHA 10 in year one, OSHA 30 by end of year two, and NFPA 70E arc-flash training. Add first aid/CPR and a driver's license (many sites require it). These are gating for most sites and staffed jobs.
Sit for the state journeyman exam
At the end of the apprenticeship, apply to sit for the state journeyman electrician exam. It tests NEC, calculations, and safety. Pass, and you are a licensed journeyman - you can work unsupervised, pull certain permits, and command journeyman scale.
Consider master electrician
After 2-4 years as a journeyman (varies by state), you can sit for the master exam. Master unlocks permit pulling, plan sign-off, foreman and shop-owner roles, and a meaningful pay step.

Cost of getting started
The apprenticeship pays you from day one - that is the point. Real costs are modest: tools (a starter set runs $300-$700 - you will add to it), work boots ($150-$250), transportation (many jobs are not near transit), and depending on the local, a small application fee. IBEW dues are typically 2-3% of gross pay once you are dispatched. If you are entering non-union, some employers charge a modest classroom/materials fee.
What to avoid: expensive for-profit trade schools that charge $10-30K promising a "career-ready electrician certificate" that is not an apprenticeship or a license. That certificate is not a shortcut to the state exam. Apply to real apprenticeships first, and use a lower-cost community-college electrical program as an application booster if you get denied on a first pass.

Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2024). Apprentices earn a percentage of journeyman scale that steps up with hours; master electricians and industrial or union electricians in high-cost markets often clear $90-$110K+ before overtime.
