What a sheet metal worker actually does

A Sheet Metal Worker (BLS occupation code 47-2211) is a skilled tradesperson who fabricates, installs, and repairs sheet-metal products — primarily HVAC ductwork, but also roofing (standing-seam and flat-lock), architectural cladding and rain screens, industrial exhaust systems, precision aerospace and defense components, food-service equipment stainless, gutter and downspout systems, and mechanical enclosures. About 660,000 sheet metal workers work in the U.S. across commercial mechanical contractors, industrial and process piping shops, architectural sheet metal firms, and specialty aerospace and defense shops. The trade splits fairly cleanly into three segments — commercial HVAC (the largest by headcount and by BLS classification), architectural (residential and commercial roofing / cladding), and industrial (food-service, aerospace, defense) — and choosing a segment early shapes which apprenticeship program you enter and which employers you build a career with.

A superintendent or shop foreman reading a sheet-metal résumé is looking for three things: journeyman-level fabrication skill (shear, brake, plasma, laser, welding), field installation experience (hangers, seams, joints, testing/balancing coordination), and current certifications (SMART Local card, OSHA 30, AWS welding, tab-and-flange systems).

The paths in

  1. SMART / SMACNA union apprenticeship. The primary path in most metros. SMART Local unions (International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers) run 4-to-5-year registered apprenticeships jointly with SMACNA (Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning National Association) contractors. Debt-free tuition, 8,000–10,000 documented on-the-job hours, 800–1,000 classroom hours, journeyman card at completion. This is the path with the strongest wage and benefit outcomes in almost every metro.
  2. Non-union apprentice or helper. Common in the South and Mountain West. On-the-job training under a licensed journeyman, less structured classroom time, no portable card. Faster to a foreman spot in some shops; lower long-term ceiling.
  3. Technical college or vocational program. Two-year Associate degree or certificate in Sheet Metal Technology or HVAC-R. Useful as a bridge into an apprenticeship — some SMART locals give credit toward apprenticeship hours for completed coursework.
  4. Military-to-trades bridge. Metalworkers, boilermakers, and structural mechanics coming out of service (Navy SMK, Air Force sheet metal / structural repair, Army 91E) can bridge into commercial or aerospace sheet metal work quickly, especially in aerospace shops around Fort Worth, St. Louis, Wichita, and San Diego.
  5. Aerospace / defense direct hire. Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Textron, and Spirit AeroSystems hire sheet-metal-experienced candidates for airframe assembly, structural repair, and mechanic-and-repairer roles. Requires a security clearance path for classified programs.

Inside a SMART apprenticeship

A SMART Local apprenticeship is one of the strongest entry paths any tradesperson can enter. Structure varies slightly by local but the shape is consistent:

  • Length: 4 years in most locals, 5 in some larger metros.
  • OJT hours: 8,000–10,000 hours across shop and field. Rotation across duct fabrication, install, service, and testing & balancing.
  • Related instruction (classroom): 800–1,000 hours across blueprints, sheet-metal layout and pattern development, welding, mechanical code, industry math, and safety.
  • Wage progression: Starts at 40–50% of journeyman scale, moves up in defined steps (5th 55%, 6th 60%, 7th 70%, and so on) at 6-month or 1-year checkpoints tied to hour milestones and coursework completion.
  • Benefits from day one: Health insurance, pension, annuity, and access to the local's training fund for continuing certifications.

Applications open at each local's Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (JATC). Requirements typically include age 18+, high school diploma or GED, valid driver's license, physical ability to lift 50 lb and climb ladders, drug test, and a written aptitude test (industry math & reading comprehension). Applications are usually opened once or twice a year; interview committees rank applicants and offer the top scores.

Your first year on the job

Whether you enter as a union apprentice or a non-union helper, the first year is where the trade sorts serious apprentices from casual ones. What I coach every first-year sheet metal worker to focus on, in order:

  1. Learn the shop tools cold. Shear, brake, and notcher speed and accuracy are the foundation. Waste 2% on your first hundred jobs and you're behind the class.
  2. Read the sheet. Prints are the trade's second language. If you cannot find the elbow you're supposed to install on a 40-page mechanical set, you cannot be trusted to install it.
  3. Volunteer for install shifts. Fabrication is craft; installation is what pays. Ask your foreman for install work early; even helper hours count.
  4. Show up on time, every time. Attendance is the single strongest predictor of who gets picked for the good jobs. First-year apprentices with even one attendance mark rarely get the plum crane, hospital, or data-center work.
  5. Take every certification your local offers. OSHA 30, aerial-lift, confined-space, welding qualifications. Free at the JATC training center; expensive elsewhere.

The specialties that move you up

Sheet metal is one of the few trades where specialization actively raises the wage, not just the ceiling. The specialties that pay best in 2026:

  • Architectural sheet metal — standing seam, flat lock, and rain screen. Slow, patient, high-skill work; commercial and high-end residential projects; strong owner-operator path.
  • Testing & balancing (TAB). A TAB certification (NEBB or AABC) opens a much smaller but higher-paying niche — commissioning-side work with lower physical demand.
  • Aerospace / defense structural. Boeing, Lockheed, Northrop, Spirit AeroSystems. Requires precision measurement (calipers, gauges, laser-tracked layout), often a clearance path, and higher pay than commercial HVAC.
  • Kitchen exhaust and NFPA 96 work. Restaurant and commercial-kitchen exhaust hoods, grease ducts, welding to code — specialty shops pay a premium.
  • Foreman & superintendent path. After journeyman status, foreman-to-superintendent is the standard promotion track and can double base earnings.

Realistic pay by segment

BLS OES data (May 2023) put the national median wage for sheet metal workers at $26.90 an hour and $55,940 annually. SMART Local scales vary by metro; in strong-union metros (Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Seattle, San Francisco), journeyman scales commonly run $50–$65 an hour on-book with fringe benefits and pension taking total-package cost to $85–$110 an hour. Non-union sheet metal in low-cost metros runs $22–$32 an hour. Foremen commonly earn $75,000–$115,000 base; specialty architectural and aerospace shops sit at the top of the band.

The mistakes I see aspiring sheet metal workers make

Skipping the SMART application. Even if you plan to work non-union for the first year, submit the application at your local's next opening. A ranked score is worth nothing until you use it, but it costs nothing to hold.
Choosing a shop over a superintendent. A sharp superintendent in a mediocre shop will teach you more than a great shop with a hands-off foreman. Ask around before you accept a first-year role.
Under-investing in prints. Sheet-metal apprentices who read prints slowly plateau at helper. Two hours a week with a plan set outside the shop is worth every minute.
Ignoring welding. AWS D9.1 sheet-metal qualifications and TIG for stainless/aluminum are what unlocks architectural, kitchen exhaust, and aerospace work. Do them at the JATC training center as soon as they are offered.
Skipping OSHA 30. Large mechanical contractors will not sign you into a job site without it. It's 30 hours online and it belongs on your résumé.
