The short version. The consulting résumé that lands interviews at MBB, Big Four, and top boutiques leads with education at the top (GPA, standardized test scores, honors), moves to professional experience in impact framing (action + method + quantified outcome), then leadership, then skills. One page, no exceptions below the manager level. Below is the exact format Marqee strategists use with clients who cross McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and Deloitte partner screens — plus the credential order that separates competitive candidates from filtered ones.
The one-page résumé
Below is the exact one-page format Marqee strategists use to open partner-level consulting screens. Serif face (Georgia), one-inch margins, education at the top, impact framing throughout.

Format & MBB screening rules
Consulting screens have specific rules that departmental hiring committees enforce hard. Break one and your résumé is screened out before a partner sees it.
- One page below the manager level. No exceptions. Two-page résumés at analyst, associate, and consultant levels are cut immediately.
- Serif face (Georgia, Garamond, Times) or Inter/Calibri sans, 10.5–11pt. Never Comic Sans, never a color other than black.
- Education at the top. MBB and Big Four screens read education first, then experience. Education-below-experience is a McKinsey-standard filter.
- GPA if 3.5+; standardized test scores if strong. GMAT 700+, GRE 165+ verbal / 160+ quant, LSAT 170+. Drops from résumé after 5–7 years post-degree.
- One-inch margins. Two-column headers are fine; two-column body content breaks parsers.
- Dates on the right. Consistent format throughout (e.g., "2019 — 2022").
Impact framing (the bullet formula)
The pattern that consistently converts:
[Action verb] + [scope] + [method or workstream] + [quantified outcome connected to a client decision]
Example. "Led five-workstream operational-turnaround diagnostic for a $2.4B industrial distributor; identified $85M annualized run-rate savings across procurement, footprint, and pricing — CEO adopted in board deck."
Verb: Led. Scope: five workstreams, $2.4B distributor. Method: operational turnaround diagnostic. Outcome: $85M annualized, adopted by CEO.
Do not write:
- "Assisted senior team on operational engagement." No scope, no method, no outcome.
- "Worked with client stakeholders across procurement, operations, and finance." No quantification.
- "Contributed to $85M savings identification." Ambiguous ownership; MBB partners cut this.
Education section
What to include
- School and degree. Full name of the institution (McCombs School of Business, University of Chicago Booth School of Business — not "UT Austin," not "Chicago").
- GPA if 3.5+ (out of 4.00). List major GPA if it's stronger and different.
- Standardized test scores if 700+ GMAT, 165+ GRE Verbal, 700+ SAT/1400+ new SAT (only for candidates within 3 years of undergrad).
- Honors: magna/summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Dean's List (if a competitive threshold), specific fellowships.
- Selective competitions or leadership: case competition wins, consulting-group chair, quiz bowl.
What to leave off
- Coursework list. Occupies space, signals nothing.
- High school (unless you're a rising undergraduate).
- GPA below 3.5 unless the school is a target-tier program with clear grade deflation and your major GPA is stronger.
Credential order
| Credential | Value in consulting | Best-fit path |
|---|---|---|
| MBA from target school | The single strongest credential; opens direct-associate pipelines | MBB associate, Big Four Senior Consultant |
| CFA Charterholder | High signal for strategy, corporate finance, PE due diligence | Strategy consulting, PE DD, corporate finance |
| PMP / PMI-ACP | Signal for operations and delivery | Operations, tech implementation, transformation |
| Six Sigma Black Belt | Signal for ops consulting; direct pipeline into operations practice | Deloitte Operations, McKinsey Operations, ops boutiques |
| CPA | Required for audit, valuable for financial due diligence | Big Four Financial Advisory, restructuring |
| CSCP (Supply Chain) | Domain signal for supply-chain practices | Kearney, Accenture Strategy, Big Four SCM |
| SHRM-SCP | Domain signal for HR / people consulting | Deloitte Human Capital, Mercer, Willis Towers Watson |
Industry-to-consulting pivot
Experienced-hire recruiting is the majority of MBB and Big Four mid-level hiring in 2026. Industry-to-consulting is a well-worn path — MBB and Big Four consulting explicitly recruit for domain expertise in life sciences, financial services, industrials, TMT, and consumer.
Frame industry work as consulting-shaped
- Name the ambiguous business problem. Not "managed marketing analytics team" but "diagnosed 18-point drop in customer conversion; ran hypothesis-driven investigation across acquisition, activation, and retention."
- Name the frameworks and methods you used. Regression, cohort analysis, SKU rationalization, portfolio optimization, RACI redesign — call them out explicitly.
- Quantify the impact. Every bullet. Every one.
- Put a client or executive audience on the outcome. Consulting is about influence; show the CEO / SVP / board decision your work drove.

Which credentials matter?
MBA from target school is the strongest. CFA for strategy / finance. Six Sigma Black Belt for ops. Domain credentials for specific practices (CSCP, SHRM).

Yes — experienced-hire is now the majority of MBB and Big Four mid-level hiring. Frame prior work as consulting-shaped: ambiguous problem, named methods, quantified impact, executive audience.
