Short version: A strong Financial Manager résumé proves three things fast — you run the plan (revenue and budget managed, forecast accuracy, close cycle), you speak the stack (SAP, Oracle Fusion, NetSuite, Workday Financials, Anaplan, OneStream), and you hold the standard (GAAP, SOX, cost accounting, treasury). Certifications above the summary. Below is a full example — then build yours free.

What a Financial Manager actually does

Financial Managers (BLS occupation code 11-3031) run FP&A, controllership, treasury, and business-partnering finance at almost every mid-market and enterprise company. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts roughly 810,000 people in the role. The title spans a wide floor: an FP&A manager at a Series-D SaaS company, an assistant controller at a manufacturer, a plant controller at a regional operations site, a treasury manager at a hospital system, a divisional finance manager at a Fortune 500 CPG, and a corporate-finance manager at a private-equity portfolio company all sit under the same code.

On a typical month a financial manager runs the monthly close, publishes MoM and YoY variance analysis, presents at the monthly business review, updates the rolling forecast, prepares the annual operating plan (AOP), partners with a business unit on decisions (pricing, hiring, capex), reviews and signs SOX-in-scope controls, and delivers a board or executive-team update. What gets a financial manager promoted to Director of Finance, Controller, or CFO is rarely the flashiest deck — it is a close cycle that shortens, forecast accuracy that holds, and the trust of the business partner.

What CFOs & ATS look for

  • Revenue or budget managed in the summary. "$180M revenue, $42M opex" sets the ceiling on your comp band.
  • Team size. Direct reports and cross-functional partners.
  • Forecast accuracy. "Held forecast accuracy within ±3% for four quarters" — the number CFOs read first.
  • Close cycle. "Cut monthly close from 9 to 5 business days" is a signal.
  • ERP and EPM stack. SAP S/4HANA, Oracle Fusion, NetSuite, Workday Financials, Microsoft Dynamics; Anaplan, Adaptive, OneStream, Hyperion.
  • SOX and controls. One line on SOX-in-scope ownership or PCAOB-audit support opens doors at public companies.
The single biggest lever: certifications above the summary, revenue managed in the first two lines, and one forecast-accuracy or close-cycle number.

A realistic pay range

Financial Manager compensation varies dramatically by industry and scope. Based on Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS OES) data for occupation code 11-3031, most Financial Managers earn between $120,000 and $205,000, with a national median annual wage near $156,000. FP&A managers at Series-C-plus SaaS commonly land in $175,000–$235,000 OTE with equity; controllers and divisional finance managers at Fortune 500 companies frequently reach $185,000–$260,000; senior finance managers in banking, private equity, and hedge fund back-office reach $220,000–$320,000+ with bonus. Bay Area, NYC, Boston, DC, and Charlotte anchor the top of the band.

  • What pushes you up the band: CPA + MBA stack, Series-C-plus SaaS or public-company exposure, SOX ownership, Anaplan/OneStream/Adaptive competency, and a demonstrable close-cycle improvement.
  • What anchors the number: industry (SaaS and financial services above traditional B2B), scope (revenue and budget managed), metro cost of living, and whether the plan includes bonus and equity.

Common resume mistakes

No revenue or budget managed. "Managed budgets" is filler. Name the number.
No forecast accuracy or close cycle. The two numbers CFOs read first.
ERP or EPM missing. SAP, Oracle Fusion, NetSuite, Workday, Anaplan, OneStream. Name yours.
Certifications buried at the bottom. CPA and MBA belong above the summary. Recruiters filter on them.
Two-column layout. Workday and Taleo scramble multi-column resumes. Use single-column with standard headings. More at ATS resume formatting.

Frequently asked questions

A one-to-two-page resume with a name, title, contact line, a summary that names revenue managed and headcount, a certifications block, a skills grid, two to three roles with quantified budget, forecast, close, and P&L bullets, and education.

One page for early-career FP&A managers with under seven years' experience; two pages for controllers, assistant CFOs, and senior finance managers with a proven multi-year P&L record.

FP&A, financial modeling, ERP by name, EPM, advanced Excel and Power BI, GAAP/IFRS, SOX controls, cost accounting, treasury basics, board- and executive-level presentation.

Every bullet should carry a number a CFO tracks — revenue or budget managed, forecast accuracy, close cycle days, variance to plan, headcount, savings delivered, working-capital days improved, or SOX findings closed.

Yes — near the top. CPA, CMA, CFA, and MBA are all keyword filters recruiters run.

Reframe analyst bullets around leadership signals — model ownership, cross-functional facilitation, monthly business-review presentation, and any interim manager coverage.
